Graphical Programming Pedagogy

This course is thoughtfully tailored to introduce educators to the dynamic realm of graphical programming using Scratch and mBlock. Its primary aim is to empower teachers with the essential skills and knowledge needed to seamlessly integrate graphical programming concepts into their computer science curriculum in schools.

The course kicks off with Session 1: Introduction to Graphical Programming, the significance of graphical programming in modern education is illuminated, highlighting its real-world applications in game development, interactive art, and educational tools. The intuitive nature of Scratch and mBlock, renowned for their visual interfaces and drag-and-drop coding approach, is unveiled. Participants embark on a hands-on journey, creating their initial animated projects using Scratch. Here, the transformative potential of graphical programming becomes tangible.

In Session 2: Building Blocks of Graphical Programming, participants delve into the foundational elements of this art. Programming blocks are elucidated as the foundational building blocks of graphical programming, and their categories, encompassing motion, control, looks, and more, are explored. The importance of control structures, notably loops and conditionals, is underscored through practical examples. Participants are actively engaged in an interactive project workshop, where they design a classic Snake game and an iconic Pac-Man game. These hands-on experiences not only reinforce their learning but also spark creativity as they add sound effects and character interactions to their projects.

 

As the course progresses to Session 3: Integrating Graphical Programming in the Curriculum, educators learn effective strategies for assessing student projects and maintaining student engagement. Moreover, they gain insights into the seamless integration of graphical programming within existing curricula, aligning it with core computer science principles such as variables and algorithms. Collaborative project development sessions empower participants to create lesson plans that effectively incorporate graphical programming, fostering innovative approaches to teaching.

In Session 4: Showcasing Advanced Features and Resources, advanced programming concepts are introduced, including variables, functions, and custom blocks, expanding the possibilities of graphical programming. Participants are directed to valuable online resources, online community, and educational materials.

Throughout this course, teachers, as participants, not only acquire a profound understanding of graphical programming but also engage in practical activities, including the creation of classic Snake and Pac-Man games. These hands-on experiences ensure that they leave the course not just equipped but inspired to empower their students with the transformative tools of graphical programming.

Movie Review 2023/4 – Parasite

Watching Parasite for the third time on TVN recently, I was once again reminded of its brilliance. The movie’s ability to evoke emotions and provoke thought remains undiminished, and it’s a testament to its storytelling prowess.

At first glance, the movie may seem like just another Asian movie, with its portrayal of life in a cramped slum area. The film gradually introduces us to the Kim family, who are struggling to make ends meet in their semi-basement dwelling. This initial setup, while seemingly typical, is crucial to the movie’s success. It provides the audience with an intimate glimpse into the characters’ lives, making it easier to relate to their struggles and aspirations.

The pace of the movie takes a fascinating turn when Kevin, the son of the Kim family, secures a job as a tutor for the wealthy Park family’s daughter. Ni reminded me to job Cikgu2 tusyen dulu2. This job opportunity, which is the result of a forged diploma, serves as the entry point for the Kims into the world of the affluent. As Kevin begins to infiltrate the Park family’s life, the Kims hatch a plan to bring the rest of the family into the mansion, disguising themselves as professionals who are indispensable to the Parks.

This turning point not only provides the movie with its central plot but also lays the foundation for exploring the overarching theme: the juxtaposition of two starkly different worlds and the social commentary that accompanies it.

The movie is not just a tale of deception and class struggle; it’s a reflection of the innate human desire for betterment and prosperity. The film masterfully navigates through the layers of deception, revealing that beneath the façade of wealth and poverty, humans share common aspirations, fears, and desires. It questions the arbitrary nature of social divisions and highlights the universality of human emotions.

Through its characters and their intricate interactions, the conveys that regardless of the social strata we belong to, we are all driven by the same fundamental needs: love, security, and a sense of belonging. It blurs the lines that divide us, reminding us that empathy should transcend class distinctions.

The movie is a cinematic gem that transcends borders and cultures. It is a film that manages to evoke powerful emotions and provoke deep contemplation even after multiple viewings. Bong Joon-ho’s storytelling prowess, coupled with the outstanding performances of the cast, creates an unforgettable cinematic experience.

Watching Kim family’s relentless pursuit of a better life and the consequences of their actions got me compelled to reflect on our own lives and society’s inequalities. Parasite serves as a mirror, urging us to examine the structures that divide us and to recognize the shared humanity that unites us all. It is a film that will continue to resonate with audiences worldwide, reminding us of the power of cinema to challenge our perceptions and leave a lasting impact on our hearts and minds.

Worth those 200 +minutes of my time 🙂

Pahang Young Innovator Challenge 2023 – Stay Curious

Pahang, Malaysia – September 29, 2023

In a remarkable display of creativity and youthful ingenuity, the UMP STEM Lab, in partnership with Chumbaka and the esteemed support of Yayasan Sime Darby, hosted the much-anticipated Pahang Young Innovator’s Challenge 2023. The event, held last Saturday, was a resounding success, drawing 62 bright and aspiring young minds from across Pahang.

The Pahang Young Innovator’s Challenge (YIC) has long been a beacon of hope for budding inventors and innovators in the region. This year’s event was no exception, as it continued to shine a light on the incredible potential of Pahang’s youth. The primary focus of YIC remains unchanged – to foster and celebrate innovation.

YIC 2023 was the result of a collaborative effort between the University Malaysia Pahang STEM Lab (UMP STEM Lab), Chumbaka, and Yayasan Sime Darby. Such partnerships not only elevate the competition but also emphasize the importance of private and educational institutions working hand in hand to inspire and empower the next generation of thinkers.

The event provided a platform for 62 students to showcase their innovative ideas, pushing the boundaries of what is possible. From sustainable energy solutions to cutting-edge technology applications, the projects on display demonstrated the incredible breadth of talent in Pahang.

One of the key objectives of YIC 2023 was to instill a sense of purpose and confidence in the participants. By encouraging them to think critically and creatively, the competition aims to inspire these young minds to become leaders in their respective fields, driving innovation and progress.

The Pahang Young Innovator’s Challenge 2023 was a testament to the potential that lies within the youth of Pahang. As the event unfolded, it became clear that the future of innovation in Malaysia is indeed bright.

 YIC 2023 not only celebrated innovation but also sowed the seeds for a future where these young minds will undoubtedly play a pivotal role in shaping Malaysia’s technological landscape.

Python Programming 2023/9 – Kolej Vokasional Rompin

36 students and teachers from Kolej Vokasional Rompin had participated in this program. Students have gone through activities such as creating a video game and displaying data using Python Programming.
