Movie Review 2023/6 – Night Owl and Feng Shui

Well, 2 K-movies – and it was woorrrthwile 🙂

“Humble people pretend they can’t see to survive, and yet, blindness can be a blessing and seeing a curse for showing the evil people do”

Major kudos to An Tae-jin for this one’s a game-changer. This movie isn’t a typical historical drama; it’s a masterful blend of fiction and reality that had me on the edge of my seat.

The narrative centers around Gyeong-su, a visually impaired acupuncturist brilliantly portrayed by Ryu Jun-yeol. Now, let me tell you, appearances can be deceiving. Gyeong-su might be visually impaired, but his other senses are razor-sharp, making him an unlikely hero in a web of political conspiracies within the palace walls.

What struck me most was the ingenious use of acupuncture in the storyline. Gyeong-su goes off the traditional Chinese medicine manual to serve justice in the face of a power struggle involving the king, his physician, and the premier. The plot unfolds with betrayals, beheadings, and a ruthless pursuit of power that kept me hooked from start to finish.

Ryu Jun-yeol’s portrayal of Gyeong-su deserves a standing ovation. The character’s courage and decency make him a hero you can’t help but root for. The film doesn’t shy away from tackling societal prejudices and the underestimation of individuals based on appearances.

As I reflect on “The Night Owl,” it’s more than just a historical thriller. It’s a thought-provoking exploration of the stark contrast between the façade of the castle’s exterior and the dark secrets concealed within. The film made me question preconceived notions and opened my eyes to the complexities of power dynamics.

Having watched only a handful of Korean movies lately, “The Night Owl” stands out as a memorable experience. It offers an intriguing perspective on the peace of a humble life versus the chaos of throne politics. And can we talk about the hot take? “And you thought acupuncture was only for treating indigestion.” Brilliant.

While everything may seem pleasant on the surface, the reality within is far from ideal. It makes you reconsider whether being in the ‘throne’ is something one would wish for ;P .

The second one is Feng Shui.

Directed by Park Hee-Gon, this film features a stellar cast and delivers a unique take on the pseudoscience of Feng Shui – a belief in the energy of the environment influencing fate. This movie revolves around Park Jae-Sang, a brilliant strategist seeking revenge. The film introduces the concept that an ideal spot for a grave can determine a family’s fate, exploring the complexities of land ownership and political intrigue.

Despite not being a fan of historical dramas, Feng Shui stood out. It masterfully blends storytelling, acting, and cinematography, making it a must-watch. The movie delves into the historical and cultural aspects of Feng Shui, unraveling its significance beyond superstition.

Feng Shui is not just a historical drama – it’s a captivating journey that bridges the gap between tradition and contemporary intrigue.

Men come and go, but land is forever

EE & Me :)

AT&S was in UMP today, sharing their thoughts on disruptive technologies in IC design. Their insights have not only refreshed my perspective on EE but have also inspired me to reflect on my own journey into this captivating world.

The talk today took me on a journey down memory lane, back to the time when I first embarked on the path of electrical engineering. My venture into the realm of electrical engineering wasn’t a premeditated decision but rather the result of a fortunate twist of fate. It all began with my deep-seated love for physics, a subject that had always intrigued and captivated me from my school days. Physics, in my eyes, held the key to understanding the rationality behind the happenings of our world.

In school, I had the privilege of representing my school team in the Physics Olympiad, a testament to my enthusiasm for this subject :). Learning the mechanics of the physical world enabled me to comprehend the principles of force and its practical applications in my daily life. The study of quantum mechanics, with its intricate and mysterious nature, led me to appreciate the intricate beauty of Allah’s creation.

Yet, among all the captivating topics in secondary school physics, my Achilles’ heel was electricity. I distinctly remember it as one of the chapters in our Form 4 syllabus. Perhaps one reason for my struggle with electricity was its intangibility. Back then, there were no advanced simulators or immersive experiments in class. We merely measured electronic properties, which left electricity feeling elusive and enigmatic.

As I progressed into my pre-university years, my passion for physics persisted. However, my perspective on the subject evolved. Physics was divided into two segments, prompting me to consider applied physics as a viable career path. It was during this period that a chance dinner with my best friend’s family altered the course of my journey.

My best friend’s father, a physics professor, became aware of my desire to delve deeper into physics. Over that dinner, he shared some valuable advice. He suggested that I consider engineering, specifically electrical engineering, as the job market was booming in this field. It was a simple but profound recommendation that changed my trajectory. It redirected my course, and today, I find myself as an electrical & electronics engineering academician.

Alhamdulilah ala kullihal for the path I have chosen. E&E engineering has provided me with the tools to comprehend the very subject that had once challenged me. It has deepened my understanding and appreciation of the world around us, bringing the once invisible world of electricity into clear focus.

Movie Review 2023/4 – Parasite

Watching Parasite for the third time on TVN recently, I was once again reminded of its brilliance. The movie’s ability to evoke emotions and provoke thought remains undiminished, and it’s a testament to its storytelling prowess.

At first glance, the movie may seem like just another Asian movie, with its portrayal of life in a cramped slum area. The film gradually introduces us to the Kim family, who are struggling to make ends meet in their semi-basement dwelling. This initial setup, while seemingly typical, is crucial to the movie’s success. It provides the audience with an intimate glimpse into the characters’ lives, making it easier to relate to their struggles and aspirations.

The pace of the movie takes a fascinating turn when Kevin, the son of the Kim family, secures a job as a tutor for the wealthy Park family’s daughter. Ni reminded me to job Cikgu2 tusyen dulu2. This job opportunity, which is the result of a forged diploma, serves as the entry point for the Kims into the world of the affluent. As Kevin begins to infiltrate the Park family’s life, the Kims hatch a plan to bring the rest of the family into the mansion, disguising themselves as professionals who are indispensable to the Parks.

This turning point not only provides the movie with its central plot but also lays the foundation for exploring the overarching theme: the juxtaposition of two starkly different worlds and the social commentary that accompanies it.

The movie is not just a tale of deception and class struggle; it’s a reflection of the innate human desire for betterment and prosperity. The film masterfully navigates through the layers of deception, revealing that beneath the façade of wealth and poverty, humans share common aspirations, fears, and desires. It questions the arbitrary nature of social divisions and highlights the universality of human emotions.

Through its characters and their intricate interactions, the conveys that regardless of the social strata we belong to, we are all driven by the same fundamental needs: love, security, and a sense of belonging. It blurs the lines that divide us, reminding us that empathy should transcend class distinctions.

The movie is a cinematic gem that transcends borders and cultures. It is a film that manages to evoke powerful emotions and provoke deep contemplation even after multiple viewings. Bong Joon-ho’s storytelling prowess, coupled with the outstanding performances of the cast, creates an unforgettable cinematic experience.

Watching Kim family’s relentless pursuit of a better life and the consequences of their actions got me compelled to reflect on our own lives and society’s inequalities. Parasite serves as a mirror, urging us to examine the structures that divide us and to recognize the shared humanity that unites us all. It is a film that will continue to resonate with audiences worldwide, reminding us of the power of cinema to challenge our perceptions and leave a lasting impact on our hearts and minds.

Worth those 200 +minutes of my time 🙂

Movie Review 2023/3 – Pinocchio

Today, I had the pleasure of watching the new adaptation of Pinocchio with my kids, and I must say, it exceeded my expectations. While the original story always emphasized the importance of truth, this version took the timeless tale to a whole new level. In this blog post, I’d like to share my thoughts on this film, especially how it reminded me of the value of spending quality time with my children while also exploring the themes of truth and conscience.

A Modern Take on a Classic Tale:
The traditional “Pinocchio” narrative centered on the consequences of lying. However, this modern adaptation broadened its scope, focusing on self-discovery and the significance of one’s conscience. It beautifully portrayed how truth alone wasn’t sufficient to break the spell that transformed a wooden puppet into a real boy.

Tom Hanks, a consistently exceptional actor, delivered a moving performance as Geppetto, Pinocchio’s creator and father figure. His portrayal added a layer of depth and emotion to the character, making me empathize deeply with their relationship. It’s always a delight to see Hanks on screen, and he didn’t disappoint in this role.

This adaptation of “Pinocchio” underscored the importance of conquering one’s conscience. It wasn’t just about telling the truth; it was about comprehending the consequences of one’s actions and making choices based on moral values. As Pinocchio navigated various challenges and temptations on his journey to becoming a real boy, I witnessed his growth and transformation, and it prompted me to reflect on my own moral compass.

While Pinocchio has traditionally been considered a children’s story, this modern version appealed to a broader audience, including adults. It served as a powerful reminder of the significance of introspection and personal growth. The film encouraged viewers of all ages to contemplate their own lives, the decisions they make, and the importance of listening to their inner voice—their conscience.

One of the most gratifying aspects of watching this adaptation of “Pinocchio” was the chance to enjoy quality family time. It was fun, having to discuss, deliberate and critique the movie with a 9 and 11 year old. Listening to their perspective opens up to new and refresh views. Allowing us to bond and engage in meaningful conversations.

Hidden Figure – the Movie :)

What a remarkable coincidence!

Today, I made the decision to skip the ACB 2022. The prospect of experiencing a fleeting moment of fame for just 2 minutes didn’t do any justice to the 45-minute drive to the venue, at least not initially. I suppose I’m still not in the mood for celebrating anything ;p hah.

Instead, I unexpectedly came across the 2016 movie “Hidden Figures.” Within the first 10 minutes, I found myself completely immerse in its 1960’s era. Those 148 minutes of my evening were truly well-spent :p.

The film, directed by Theodore Melfi, took me on a journey through the remarkable stories of three brilliant African-American women mathematicians who worked at NASA during the Space Race. This inspiring movie allowed me to explore the historical and emotional depths it offered.

“Hidden Figures” immerses you in the early days of the Space Race, an era when complex mathematical calculations were performed by teams of human computers. These individuals, often women, were unsung heroes who meticulously solved equations essential for launching rockets into space and ensuring the safety of astronauts.

The heart of the film lies in the extraordinary life and career of Katherine Johnson, portrayed brilliantly by Taraji P. Henson (dulu she played the comedy role). Katherine’s mathematical brilliance knew no bounds, yet she faced the formidable challenges of racial and gender discrimination as an African-American woman. However, her resilience and talent propelled her into the spotlight as she calculated the trajectory for John Glenn’s historic orbital flight.

Katherine Johnson’s role as a human computer was pivotal during an era when machines we now associate with the term “computer” were still in their infancy. Before the advent of modern electronic computers, human computers like Katherine performed complex calculations entirely by hand or with the assistance of mechanical calculators.

These human computers were expected to possess an unparalleled understanding of mathematics, geometry, and physics. They were responsible for solving intricate equations related to rocket propulsion, orbital mechanics, and more. Accuracy was paramount, as even the smallest error in a calculation could have catastrophic consequences during a space mission.

Katherine Johnson’s contributions as a human computer were extraordinary. She was known for her ability to perform complex calculations quickly and accurately. Her calculations were the critical link between theoretical mathematics and practical space exploration.

Whether it was plotting the trajectory of a spacecraft, determining launch windows, or calculating reentry angles, Katherine’s role was to ensure that the missions were carried out with precision. Her work was essential for the success and safety of astronauts.

The movie beautifully captures the collaboration between engineers and human computers. Engineers, responsible for designing spacecraft and rockets, worked closely with human computers like Katherine to ensure the accuracy of critical mathematical calculations. This synergy between two distinct roles was fundamental in the success of NASA’s missions.

The film paints a vivid picture of the racial segregation that pervaded society at the time. Katherine’s complaint about segregation in the workplace serves as a poignant reminder of the harsh realities she and her fellow African-American colleagues endured while striving to make their contributions known and recognized.

“Hidden Figures” not only introduced me to the untold stories of extraordinary women in STEM but also offered a powerful lesson on resilience, determination, and the importance of breaking down barriers in the pursuit of knowledge and progress. This remarkable film continues to inspire and serves as a testament to the indomitable human spirit. Katherine Johnson’s role as a human computer exemplifies the vital contributions made by these individuals in shaping history. I encourage everyone to explore this movie and discover the hidden figures who played pivotal roles in the success of NASA’s missions.

Now, do I missed those hotel food?

Competition and Motivation

Last Wednesday marked an exciting day at Politeknik Sultanah Bahiyah, Kulim as I had the privilege of being an advisor and judge at the 2023 RBTX regional competition in the Northern zone. This event brought together over 130 teams vying for spots in the final competition for line tracing and sumo challenges. What struck me most was the incredible diversity among the competitors, ranging from 5-year-olds to adults.

Over the past five years, I’ve witnessed a significant shift in the way participants enter these competitions – not just through schools but also through specialized learning centers. These centers see these competitions as a platform to showcase their modules, products, and training, and it’s been a joy to witness how competitions can bring out the best in everyone involved.

Competitions have always served as a powerful extrinsic motivator. They push participants to strive for excellence, to refine their skills, and to do whatever it takes to come out on top. However, my dream has always been to see intrinsic motivation spark within these young minds. I believe that when young learners begin to see the value in the challenge itself, they take their journey to a whole new level.

As I observed the young participants, I couldn’t help but notice that they fell into two distinct categories. The first group was here solely to win the competition. They treated the robot as a black box – a means to an end. Their focus was on the victory, and they were willing to do whatever it took to achieve it. The second group, on the other hand, valued the challenge itself. They approached robot design as a white box, delving into the intricacies of how things worked, and relishing the learning process.

It’s crucial to understand that these two categories don’t necessarily correlate with age. Instead, they reflect the maturity of these young participants. Some may find their intrinsic motivation early on, while others may need time to discover the joy of learning for its own sake. Both approaches are valid and valuable, contributing to the growth and development of these budding engineers and problem solvers.

As custodians of these young minds, we play a crucial role in their journey. Whether we are trainers, teachers, or parents, our involvement can make all the difference. Some come to cheer and motivate, which is wonderful, but there are also those who take it to another level. They actively engage with these young learners, nurturing their curiosity, and encouraging them to explore the inner workings of their robots. It’s these mentors who often inspire the next generation of innovators.

The 2023 RBTX regional competition was not just a showcase of technical prowess but a testament to the potential within each young participant. It reaffirmed my belief in the power of competitions to drive excellence and foster a love for learning. As we continue to support these budding engineers and scientists, let us remember that there’s no one-size-fits-all approach. Whether they see the robot as a black box or a white box, what truly matters is that they are on a path of discovery, growth, and endless possibilities.

Shelby’s iconic line in Ford vs Ferrari, “You can’t win a race by committee,” resonates with the idea that while teamwork is crucial in many aspects of life, there are situations where swift, decisive action is paramount. It emphasizes that sometimes, bureaucratic processes and excessive deliberation can hinder progress and prevent the achievement of goals, particularly in fast-paced and competitive environments like racing. In such scenarios, a leader or an individual with the authority to make quick decisions can make all the difference between success and failure. It’s not about disregarding teamwork or collaboration but recognizing that certain situations demand a clear and immediate course of action. Shelby’s words serve as a reminder that effective leadership and the ability to make swift, informed decisions are essential traits, especially when time is of the essence and victory hangs in the balance.

Both “Gran Turismo” and “Ferrari vs. Ford” offer distinct yet equally captivating perspectives on the world of automobiles.
