20/21 1 Antenna Theory & Propagation

BEE 4433  Antenna Theory and Radio Propagation is among the courses that I’ll be teaching in this semester. Looking forward to meeting the new batch online :).

There are 3 main outcomes targeted from this course as shown here:

  1. Theories
  2. Simulations, and
  3. Communication

The first outcome is targeted into establishing a solid understanding on the theories and concept behind an antenna design. This include being able to characterize and explain

  • The operating mechanism of an antenna mathematically,
  • The physics of radiations generated by an antenna structure, and
  • The advantages and limitation of an antenna design

The second outcome aims in developing students ability to design and simulate antenna to meet design requirements.

Here, not only is the simulation ability is reflected via the competencies of using a CAD tools such as the 3D full wave solver, but also to fabricate and measure the performance of a prototype antenna in a lab scale.

This means a student should be able to:-

  • Model the radiating structure
  • Analyze and conclude simulation results – making sense of the simulated results, and finally,
  • to evaluate antenna experimentally – which include fabrication process and measurement techniques.

The final outcome touches on a skills that is essential for all engineering graduates – communication both verbal and written skills.

Specifically for this course, we’ll look into these two domain:-

  • Review journal articles
  • Convey engineering design ideas and experimental results via scientific reporting

Array Antenna Reviews

Array antenna is in a great demand to improve the performance of a single unit antenna. Despite increased in gain and directivity, radiation pattern of an array antenna can be steered towards desired angle.

Assignment for today’s Antenna class it to analyse 4 journals on antenna design and discuss on the following items:-

  1. Merits and performance parameters when describing array antennas,
  2. Geometrical construction of the array antennas, and
  3. The optimum array antenna configurations
