Movie Review 2023/3 – Pinocchio

Today, I had the pleasure of watching the new adaptation of Pinocchio with my kids, and I must say, it exceeded my expectations. While the original story always emphasized the importance of truth, this version took the timeless tale to a whole new level. In this blog post, I’d like to share my thoughts on this film, especially how it reminded me of the value of spending quality time with my children while also exploring the themes of truth and conscience.

A Modern Take on a Classic Tale:
The traditional “Pinocchio” narrative centered on the consequences of lying. However, this modern adaptation broadened its scope, focusing on self-discovery and the significance of one’s conscience. It beautifully portrayed how truth alone wasn’t sufficient to break the spell that transformed a wooden puppet into a real boy.

Tom Hanks, a consistently exceptional actor, delivered a moving performance as Geppetto, Pinocchio’s creator and father figure. His portrayal added a layer of depth and emotion to the character, making me empathize deeply with their relationship. It’s always a delight to see Hanks on screen, and he didn’t disappoint in this role.

This adaptation of “Pinocchio” underscored the importance of conquering one’s conscience. It wasn’t just about telling the truth; it was about comprehending the consequences of one’s actions and making choices based on moral values. As Pinocchio navigated various challenges and temptations on his journey to becoming a real boy, I witnessed his growth and transformation, and it prompted me to reflect on my own moral compass.

While Pinocchio has traditionally been considered a children’s story, this modern version appealed to a broader audience, including adults. It served as a powerful reminder of the significance of introspection and personal growth. The film encouraged viewers of all ages to contemplate their own lives, the decisions they make, and the importance of listening to their inner voice—their conscience.

One of the most gratifying aspects of watching this adaptation of “Pinocchio” was the chance to enjoy quality family time. It was fun, having to discuss, deliberate and critique the movie with a 9 and 11 year old. Listening to their perspective opens up to new and refresh views. Allowing us to bond and engage in meaningful conversations.

The new adaptation of Pinocchio breathed fresh life into a classic tale, focusing on self-discovery and the conquest of one’s conscience. Tom Hanks’s exceptional performance added emotional depth to the film, making it a must-watch for all ages. So, the next time you plan a movie night with your kids, I highly recommend revisiting this timeless story with a modern twist. It teaches us that while telling the truth is crucial, understanding and following our conscience is even more vital in becoming the best versions of ourselves.
