Great Mathematicians: Al-Khorezmi
In Maverannarkh of the Samanidov era (IX – 12th century) a synthesis of Greek science and philosophy school, Arabic geography, Persian history and Central Asian medical and mathematical schools was formed. It was this synthesis that yielded brilliant results. A group of talented scientists gathered here. Muhamad Musa al-Khorezmi (783-857) was the founder of algebra and worked for Baghdad’s Baytul al-Hikma Academy. The name of this section of mathematics is taken from his work “Kitab al-jabr wa mukabala” (Book of Restores and Contrasts), which introduces rules of action with algebraic values, gives a way to solve equations of the 1st and 2nd degree. The very name al-Khorezmi is preserved in mathematics as the term “algorithm.” Khorezmi’s works “Astronomical Table,” “The Treatise on the Sundial” and others translated into Latin, had a fruitful influence on the development of medieval scientific thought in the countries of the East and West.
The scientific range of al-Khorezmi is very wide – it is mathematics, geometry, astronomy, geography, history and other sciences. His works “Hisob al-Hind” (“Indian Account”), “Kitob al-Jabr wa mukabala,” “Kitob al-Arz” (Face of the Earth), “Kitob al-Tarih” (Book of History), “Arifmetica”, “Marmar soat haika” (“In the marble clock”), “Yahudi era Of Bayramlari era”) entered the treasury of world science.
