Recent Advancement Of HCCI Technology Using Biodiesel As A Potential Alternative Fuel

In a world of rapid development, all of these movements require efficient engines. The benefits of the latest technology have given birth to homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) engine. Advantages of HCCI engines are energy efficient in terms of fuel consumption and the emission levels from the exhaust are significantly lower. At the same time, the use of biodiesel as a fuel in HCCI engines contributes huge impact in terms of fuel efficiency and pollution. Also the biodiesels have the potential to be used as alternative fuels replacing depleted fossil fuels. Along with the positive impacts, HCCI also has some drawbacks; control of auto-ignition, cold start capability, high carbon monoxide (CO) and unburned hydrocarbon (UHC) emissions and low load operating range. Despite of these, a main challenge of HCCI is knocking issue due to low load operation. This will lead to losses of power, shorten engine life and severe engine damage. Recent studies and experiments related to the use of biodiesels in HCCI and compression ignition (CI) engines will be discussed.
