At the first glance, my head of faculty appointed me as a new portal administrator for 2 years terms. For me, I don’t have any experience deals with portal because the new task requires me to transfer from the old portal to the new portal start from scratch.
Old portal: https://fkee.ump.edu.my/
New portal: https://ftkee.ump.edu.my/
Before I accepting this task this year, I didn’t know much about web portal development. So I took this as an opportunity to learn something new. After done some research from the Youtube channel, I came to know about things like CSS, HTML and Javascript and free platform such as JOOMLA. Thus, I know what is the minimum requirement needed for portal development, and the actual process went much complex than that. So here I would like to write about my developing process and the things I have learnt in this recent month.
My training started with the familiar with Joomla basics. This was just to ensure I knew the basics that were used in the development such as users, system, menus, contents, components and extension. I also had a brief tutorial session conducted by Mr. Faizul and Madam Azlina from PTMK UMP on Joomla modules to build pages from scratch.
Then, I had a requirement session, which helped me to know how create pages. In Joomla, pages are simply called articles. After that, there was a session on assign pages to the Joomla navigation menu. This process to allow visitors to access your new page, it’s time to assign it to a menu.
As a conclusion, my first time feel as a web developer has improve my skills as a lecturer that deal in teaching final year subject such as Data Communication and Multimedia technology and application, and I’m very happy to learn it.
